Silt fence is the most commonly used Best Management Practice (BMP) for sediment control, and is the most incorrectly used BMP - even when it is installed correctly - which it ususally isn't. Silt fence is usually found along the outside permieter of site delineating the property boundaries, and is found on 99% of all erosion and sediment control (ESC) plans.

Contrary to popular belief, the main cost associated with erosion and sediment control on construction sites is not the initial ESC design and monitoring costs - but rather the ESC measures specified on the plans that require installation and maintenance over the course of the project.

As an ESC instructor as well as a private consultant, the one thing I always tell students that are interested in getting into erosion and sediment control (ESC) design, is always go and visit your work site before you start putting pen to paper (or opening up AutoCAD), and walk around thinking about the different aspects of your site.

Hopefully you are all aware that your regular sediment control pond relies on time and very slow water velocity to drop the particles out of suspension to the bottom. If you were to look at your soils on site, you would notice that the particle size as compared to the volume and retention time of your average sediment control pond just doesn't cut it - not even close.So why even dig them in the first place? The simple answer to that, is because that's all people know how to do. Repeat past mistakes.

A method that I've used on a few sites is the use of above-ground, vertical, plastic storage tanks. They range from a 305 to a 10,000 gallon capacity and can be used as an alternative to sediment ponds on smaller-sized sites that don't have room to accommodate a sediment pond, or would rather avoid the costs associated with the construction and decommissioning of large sediment ponds.

Wheel washes on site can be both beneficial and not. Wheel washes are primarily installed on muddy and potentially-problematic sites to remove the dirt and mud from the truck tires prior to leaving site.
